Three Things You Need to Know on January 9th

January 9, 2019

President Trump gave his first Oval Office address last night. During the address, Trump made another pitch for a wall on the southern border and blamed Democrats for the partial government shutdown, saying they are refusing to fund border security. President Trump and congressional leaders are expected to get together at the White House today for another meeting on the shutdown. This is Day 19 of the shutdown.

Joshua Tree National Park in California will be off-limits to visitors starting tomorrow.  Park spokesman George Land says the closure will likely last for the duration of the shutdown.  The lack of funds has resulted in only eight rangers to oversee the park, and unsupervised visitors have reportedly caused a lot of damage. Accumulation of trash and human waste have been a problem in many national parks during the shutdown.

Colorado officials have issued an AMBER Alert for a teen missing from the Denver area.  The alert was issued just before midnight last night for 17-year-old Samantha Herrera.  Herrera was last seen in Sheridan yesterday afternoon and is thought to be traveling with 19-year-old Rodney Brown.  Brown is considered violent and authorities say he may be armed.  The pair may be traveling in a white Honda Accord with Colorado license plates.  Anyone who sees the two teens or knows their location is asked to call 911 to report it.
