Parts of Brazil's Amazon rain forest are going up in smoke. The country's National Institute for Space Research says its satellites detected more than 72-thousand fires between January and this month, including more than nine-thousand since last week. Smoke from the fires caused a blackout in the city of Sao Paulo on Monday. 

Authorities in Southern California are hunting for a possible sniper who shot a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Deputy. Angel Reinosa is in the hospital after a gunshot from a four-story building hit his bulletproof vest Wednesday afternoon. The 21-year-old trainee was shot in the parking lot of the county sheriff's department in Lancaster, about an hour north of Los Angeles. 

Former Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper is now officially running for the U.S. Senate.  In a video posted late last night to YouTube, Hickenlooper said he previously thought Washington, D.C. would not be the right fit for him.  But he added that he still wants to get things done for the people of Colorado.  Hickenlooper dropped out of the race for the Democratic nomination for president last week.
