Three Things You Need to Know on February 21st

February 21, 2019

As this story continues to develop, we seem to know less and less. Empire actor Jussie Smollett is under arrest for allegedly filing a false police report. The Chicago Police Department confirmed this morning that Smollett is in the custody of detectives. He'd claimed he was the victim of a hate-crime attack in Chicago last month but is now being charged with felony disorderly conduct and expected to appear before a judge today.

Teachers in Oakland, California are expected to be on the picket lines this morning.  They're striking over pay, the high cost of living, and overcrowded classrooms.  Meanwhile, public school students in West Virginia are back in the classroom today.  Teachers scored a quick victory after legislators killed a bill this week supporting private and charter schools. Denver teachers were also on strike recently and came to an agreement with the district after three days.

A Montessori school in Denver is warning parents about a possible mumps outbreak.  The principal of Bright Horizons Montessori School sent a letter to parents on Tuesday saying there is at least one and possibly more cases of mumps at the school.  The letter went over possible signs and symptoms of mumps that parents should look for.  The letter also said some children could come down with a milder case of the mumps if they haven't finished getting their mumps vaccinations.
